Message from the Executive Director

Carol Worthey's dual career has expanded on both fronts: music and art recently. Let me enumerate some of the wins.

Carol garnered the cover article for the first quarter IAWM Journal (International Alliance for Women in Music) featuring a full-color print of her work "Musical Mermaid" on the cover. In her article, entitled "Intriguing Counterpoint" Carol discusses both the stresses and pleasures of having dual careers. Later, Carol was welcomed as a new member of The Ebell of Los Angeles, the oldest woman's club in southern California. A show at the Royal Gallery in Glendale, California exhibited a new artwork of Carol's "No More Genocides!" that commemorated and protested the inhumanity of the Armenian genocide. Carol applied for an received a Mu Phi Epsilon Chapter Grant sponsoring herself and other chapter musicians to the 2008 ICWM conference in Bejing, China.

As a composer, Carol finished a symphonic work, "Jade Flute in Lo Yang" for orchestra with three traditional Chinese intruments which was world-premiered at the ICWM 2008 Conference in Beijing, China. Carol also delivered a very successful seminar "East Meets West" at the China Conservatory on integrating Chinese instruments with Western instruments. Part of the joy in creating the new musical work was the opportunity to consult with a Chinese Dizi (flute) master and exchange musical thoughts. Thanks to Mary Au (pianist) we had her entire score translated into Chinese prior to submission to the ICWM committee which was quite a challenge and helped the Chinese musicians understand the score. Also, Carol was honored to receive the Mu Phi Epsilon ACME award for distinguished musical achievement.

Distinguished cellist, Tess Remy-Schumacher performed the "Elegy" concerto at the UCO Jazz Club in Okalahoma.

On the Art front, Carol exhibited works at two shows at the ARTZworks Gallery in Ventura,California, An artwork at the Johnson Art Collection gallery on Melrose in Los Angeles and another artwork at the James Gray Gallery in Bergamont Station in Santa Monica as well as exhibiting five paintings at the seventh annual Artists for A Better World show. Carol was invited to exhibit three large works at the Biennale d'Arte Contemporanea di Firenze 2007 in Florence, Italy.

Following the invitation to the Biennale, Carol proposed (and it was accepted) to create a musical fanfare in the Renaissance tradition to open the Biennale. Carol wrote and prepared this musical work and the Florence world-premiere of "Fanfare for The New Renaissance" was performed by the Brass Dimension Ensemble conducted by maestro Luca Benucci as music director. The musicians so loved the work that they insisted on performing it twice! each time to a standing ovation. The performance earned her a special award from both the Biennale and City of Florence! The work received an encore performance at the 2008 Santa Fiora Music Festival and received it's American premiere with the Bemidji Symphony in March, 2009 as part of their 70th Anniversary Season "Fanfare!". Look for this work to be performed in Alaska this April.

A fantastic, successful one-woman art show, featuring Carol's work, was held for two months, December 2008 and January 2009, at the The Ebell of Los Angeles "Grand Salon". Many dignitaries attended her reception and she sold several major works.
